Personality & Traits

General Overview After gender restrictions were dropped on all branches in 1997, Cassandra "Cassie" McMillan was drafted out of college where she was originally assigned an Intelligence billet but went to Ranger School and was among the first female graduates. She was assigned to 1st Battalion, 75th Rangers and deployed to Poland - though she was promoted to Captain, she was only in command of a squad and generally assigned to recon operations. For Operation Reset, her squad was assigned as forward artillery observers for 5th Infantry.
Strengths & Weaknesses Cassie grew up with a strong sense of right and wrong as a result of her upbringing - her father was a Texas Ranger and her mother being fairly religious. As such, it's both her greatest asset and weakness in this new world. She won't attack the defenseless or innocent, but that also means she won't abandon them if she can help it. It also means she can be manipulated through this trait.

The other double-edged part of her is that she can be strong willed - it was all but a requirement to be a woman in the Rangers, but it often means that once set on a course of action, it is difficult to convince her to change it. That is not to say she won't change her mind if presented a good enough reason, but it does make her seem as uncompromising or overly assertive.

The war and pressures of serving in one of America's elite units as a never truly accepted minority means that her personality seems to shift erratically. This is more due to the fact that before being drafted, she was driven but easy to get along with, ready with a smile and wit. But now she often has to wear a mask of grim determination and forceful assertiveness to be taken seriously and it has caused her no small degree of pain trying to reconcile the two different personalities.
Ambitions One day she'll get home to Texas, but she won't do it on the backs of innocent people. And as things develop, so too will this change.
Hobbies & Interests Once upon a time, Cassie used to be something of an amateur artist and loved going to her uncle's ranch in East Texas to go horesback riding and camping. She wanted to be a schoolteacher but she also thought of herself as a "modern cowgirl", perhaps a fad from living in Texas but now it's a memory from happier times.

Personal History Born on September 15 1971, Cassandra McMillan was an only child due to complications to her mother resulting from her birth. Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, her father was a Texas Ranger and her mother alternated between stay-at-home mom and taking on various jobs when needed. As such, sometimes, Cassie would occasionally have to stay with her father's brother or with her mother's parents, but overall had a stable and loving family life. This also meant that she grew up as a modern American teenager but also learned the old fashioned values of hard work and independence of rural life as well.

In 1989, she graduated high school and had a partial scholarship to the University of Texas at San Antonio. She utilized it to start on her way to getting a degree to become a schoolteacher, but it took longer because she had to stop and find work to pay for the rest of her tuition to UTSA. That meant by the time the war broke out in 1996, she was in her final year, 3 years off from just having gone straight through. Cassie considered enlisting, she had grown up with stories of her uncle serving in Vietnam, her grandfathers serving in World War Two and Korea, and stories of her ancestors who fought for Texan Independence and even American Independence. However, her parents were both against this and recruiters were not keen on taking many women.

However, by 1997, the President had instituted the draft and signed an Executive Order that all restrictions in all branches and all professions were to be dropped - the United States needed as many people as it could get. As such, it meant that Cassie was drafted but her recent degree meant she was drafted as an officer. Originally to be put in an Intelligence billet, Cassie instead decided she would serve on the frontlines and to prove herself, she applied to Ranger School. The Army was forced to accept her application, and made her life a living hell for it. But Cassie succeeded, earning her Ranger Tabs and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 75th Rangers. She was shipped off to Europe.

Ranger leadership, however, was not thrilled with this and while they assigned her a "chalk", the old guard decided instead to put her on forward observer and recon missions embedded with other US units in Poland. For the next two and a half years, Cassie would continue to carry out this role - this ended up saving her life when most of 1st Battalion was sent to Norway, which was hit with Soviet nuclear weapons after the 82nd Airborne managed a successful landing. Her Company would be bounced from unit to unit until 2000, when she was told she would be going with 5th Infantry Division to Lodz.

And her whole world changed that fateful day outside Kalisz in April of 2000...
